Overview
Utah commissions notaries public through the Lieutenant Governor for a four-year term. Remote online notarization is a separate remote-notary certification. You must already be a commissioned Utah notary, be hired or contracted by an approved vendor, increase total bond coverage to $10,000, and pay a $50 RON fee after the office reviews your documents. Reapply for the remote certification each time you renew the traditional commission.

Start Here: Traditional Commission, Then Remote Certification
Pass the exam, file the $5,000 bond and oath, and receive the traditional commission first. Remote certification requires an approved-vendor relationship and $10,000 total bond coverage.

Part 1: Traditional Utah Notary Commission
Skip this section if you already hold an unexpired Utah notary public commission. You cannot obtain remote-notary certification until this is in place.

Complete traditional notary education Take and pass the online exam through the Lieutenant Governor’s process. Pay $95 immediately after the test ($55 administration + $40 testing). Retakes within 30 days are $40 each; after 30 days you pay the full $95 again. |

Obtain a $5,000 surety bond Purchase a four-year $5,000 notarial bond. Sign as principal. Have the Oath of Office notarized. Bonds should be dated within 90 days of commission approval (Notarial Bond & Oath of Office). |

Submit the traditional application Complete the background check and upload the bond, notarized oath, and any required explanations through the Utah Notary Request Portal. The Certificate of Authority is emailed after approval. |

Keep the four-year commission current A notarial commission is not effective until the Lieutenant Governor approves the oath and bond. Remote certification is a later step. |
Part 2: Online (RON) Commission
You must be hired or contracted by an approved vendor. Use the official vendor list only; the office does not treat it as a recommendation of one vendor. Total bond coverage for remote certification is $10,000.

Upload your electronic seal Upload the PDF containing your electronic signature and seal in the application portal. |

Pay and submit After the Lieutenant Governor’s office successfully reviews the documents, you receive an email with instructions to pay the $50.00 RON application fee—separate from the initial notary fee. Wait for the final confirmation email that you are an active remote notary. |

Q: Can I apply for the online commission first?
