Overview

To ensure a smooth, secure Remote Online Notarization (RON) experience, all users must meet certain system requirements. This article outlines supported devices, operating systems, browsers, and network requirements for notaries and clients/signers.

Supported Devices & Browsers (Overview)

Notaries (Host / RON Professional)

  • Device: Laptop or Desktop computer only
  • Browsers:
    • Google Chrome (latest version)
    • Mozilla Firefox (latest version)
    • Microsoft Edge (latest version)

Clients / Signers / Witnesses / Attorneys-in-Fact

  • Laptop/Desktop: Chrome, Firefox, or Edge (latest version)
  • iOS Mobile/Tablet: Safari browser only
  • Android Mobile/Tablet: Chrome browser only

Important for Mobile Users:

  • Open the session link directly in your device’s browser (Safari on iOS, Chrome on Android).
  • Do not open the link inside a third-party app (email app, social media app, in-app browser, etc.) or the session will not work correctly.

Requirements for Notaries

Notaries must use a laptop or desktop computer to host and perform RON sessions.

Operating System (Recommended)

  • Windows 10 or later
  • macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later

Other desktop operating systems may work but are not officially supported or tested.

Browser Requirements

  • Google Chrome (latest version)
  • Mozilla Firefox (latest version)
  • Microsoft Edge (latest version)

Additional Browser Settings:

  • JavaScript must be enabled
  • Cookies must be allowed for the platform domain
  • Pop-up blocking may need to be disabled for the site if prompted
  • Hardware acceleration enabled (recommended for smoother video)

Hardware Requirements

  • Device Type: Laptop or desktop computer
  • Webcam: Built-in or external camera required
  • Microphone: Built-in or external microphone required
  • Speakers or Headset: Required to hear participants
  • Recommended:
    • At least 4 GB RAM (8 GB or more recommended)
    • Screen resolution of 1280 × 720 or higher

Additional Requirements for Notaries

  • Stable high-speed internet connection (see Network Requirements below)
  • Ability to receive email for platform notifications and transaction details

Requirements for Clients / Signers / Witnesses

Clients, signers, witnesses, and attorneys-in-fact have more flexibility in device choice but must still meet the minimum requirements.

Supported Devices

  • Laptop/Desktop:
    • Windows or macOS
    • Browser: Chrome, Firefox, or Edge (latest version)
  • iOS Mobile/Tablet:
    • Device: iPhone or iPad
    • Browser: Safari only
  • Android Mobile/Tablet:
    • Device: Android smartphone or tablet
    • Browser: Chrome only

Important:

  • Open the session link in Safari (iOS) or Chrome (Android).
  • Do not use in-app browsers from email apps, messaging apps, or social media.

Browser & Feature Requirements

  • Latest version of a supported browser
  • Webcam and microphone access must be allowed
  • JavaScript enabled
  • Cookies enabled for the platform domain

Identity Verification Requirements

  • A mobile device with an active phone number (SMS-capable) is required to complete identity verification.
  • A valid government-issued photo ID may be required for credential analysis.
  • Our system does not allow signers to upload a copy of their ID for security and fraud-prevention purposes. The signer must always have the physical ID in their possession during verification to ensure authenticity and reduce the risk of identity fraud.

No Downloads Required

  • No additional software, plugins, or app downloads are required to join a session.
  • Everything runs directly in the supported web browser.

Network & Internet Requirements

Reliable network connectivity is critical for a successful RON session.

Recommended Internet Speeds

  • Minimum:
    • 3 Mbps download / 2 Mbps upload
  • Recommended:
    • 10 Mbps download / 5 Mbps upload or higher for best audio/video quality

Connection Type

  • Wired Ethernet: Recommended for notaries hosting sessions
  • Wi-Fi: Supported but should be stable with strong signal strength
  • Avoid using mobile hotspots or public Wi-Fi networks when possible.

Firewall & Security Considerations

  • Your network or IT department must allow:
    • Standard HTTPS traffic (port 443)
    • WebRTC or similar real-time communication services used for audio/video
  • Corporate networks with strict firewalls, VPNs, or content filters may need to whitelist the platform’s domain(s).

Unsupported Environments

The following setups are not supported and may cause failures:

  • Outdated browsers or unsupported browser versions
  • Internet Explorer or legacy browsers
  • In-app browsers embedded in email, messaging, or social apps
  • Devices without webcams or microphones
  • Joining from a locked-down corporate network that blocks real-time video traffic
  • Very slow or unstable internet connections

Best Practices for a Successful Session

  • Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications to improve performance.
  • Test your camera and microphone before the session.
  • Ensure your device’s date and time are correct (incorrect system time can cause security or SSL issues).
  • Use a quiet, well-lit environment so the notary can clearly see and hear you.

Common Questions

Q: Can a notary join from a mobile device?

A: No. Notaries must use a laptop or desktop computer to perform RON transactions.

Q: Do clients need to install any software or apps?

A: No. Clients join using a supported browser; no plugins or downloads are required.

Q: What if my browser or device is not supported?

A: You or your clients may experience issues joining or completing the session. Switch to a supported device and browser listed above.
